MTC Short Modules

At Mkuru Training Camp we offer 2/3 days modules for skills development and cultural exchange open to tourists and residents.

You can stay with us and join one of our modules during your trip in Northern Tanzania or include one or more modules in a longer tailored experiences.

Sentinel Outdoor Institute, a leading team of professionals teaching and managing wilderness medicine for more than a decade, and MTC have joined hands to fundraise for a mobile medical clinic and a mobile veterinary service for the 800 residents of Mkuru and their livestock through this course. Sentinel Outdoor Institute and MTC will also sponsor the participation of six health officers from the neighbouring communities. The maximum number of participants to the course is 20 people.

Basic Wilderness First Aid

What: An overview of wilderness medicine.

Who: For those looking for the fundamentals of wilderness medicine.

Key Course Components:


• Scene assessment


• Patient assessment


• Identifying life threatening injuries


• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)


• Caring for injuries and illnesses including: stopping bleeding
cleaning and caring for wounds
managing and splinting fractured bones and joints
snake bites

• Safely moving patients

BFA and CPR certification from SOI.

The Basic First Aid course is an excellent introduction to handling a medical emergency.  This course is more than just CPR training; it offers an opportunity to learn how to provide medical care and, just as importantly, how to do so safely.  This is an excellent chance to learn the basic skills that allow the student to be an asset when someone needs medical help.

Cost
The cost of the course, inclusive of one night accommodation, all meals and the training offered by Outdoor Sentinel Institute is:
Accommodation in twin tents with shared toilets and showers: 120$ pp sharing. Single supplement: 50$.
Dorms (sleep 10): 70$
Transport can be arranged to and from Arusha (Pick up point Shoprite and Friedkin Recreational Centre – The Fit Heron).
All profits will fund a mobile clinic and a veterinary clinic, so the more funds we raise, the more days we will be able to sponsor!

Optional walk up the hill above Mkuru to see the sunrise and the Meru and Kilimanjaro mountains.
Morning
  • Where we are. The Meru – Kilimanjaro ecosystem: the water, the vegetation, the wildlife corridor, the savannah habitat, plants & animals adaptations, human activities impact.
  • Field trip: vegetation survey and sample collection in the bush.
Lunch break
Afternoon
  • Footprint test and sustainability path. Practical advices on how to reduce the human footprint.
  • Visit to sustainability practices examples in the surrounding area.
  • Meeting with the Maasai community: traditional life in a changing world.
Traditional dinner by the fire.
 
Day 3
Morning
  • Animal survey, seeking for sign of presence in the bush.
  • Ecology concepts: ecosystems, trophic chain.

  • Orienteering session. Bush walking and survival practices with a Maasai guide, discovering and recognize the sings of bush wildlife.

A two-days experience with the Nasaruno group cooperative of Maasai women artisans for beading your own jewelry. Dedicated to women and girls, particularly designed for mothers and daughters.
